The SR-72 is an advanced, hypersonic reconnaissance and strike aircraft currently under development by Lockheed Martin. It is designed to fly at speeds exceeding Mach 6 (6 times the speed of sound), which would make it the fastest aircraft ever built. The SR-72 is expected to have both unmanned and manned capabilities, depending on the mission requirements.
The aircraft will use a unique propulsion system known as a Combined Cycle Engine, which blends a traditional turbine engine with a ramjet engine. This will allow the aircraft to reach hypersonic speeds while still providing the high stability needed for surveillance and strike missions.
The SR-72 is expected to have a range of over 2,000 miles and cruising altitude of 80,000 feet, making it capable of flying anywhere on the planet within an hour. The aircraft is in development as a successor to the SR-71 Blackbird, which was retired in 1998.
